Welcome to the home site of the Houston Scholastic Chess Association, an organization dedicated to promoting scholastic chess in the southeast Texas region and Houston area.
The organizers seek to provide inexpensive entry level chess contests FOR FUN throughout the Hous ton area. We also strive to promote a smooth progression to stronger levels of play by providing optional USCF rated sections at most of our competitions.
We aim to provide sections of no more than 32 players and usually much smaller, with individual trophies in each section and team trophies determined by adding results from various sections.
Although other regions of the state point out that our methods often result in “weak” players winning school trophies by doing well in “weak” divisions and penalizing teams with many strong players who must face each other, we feel that this is not a problem with our type of event. We try to promote the growth of school programs by offering every school the chance to succeed and “win” once in awhile. In fact, we believe that the competition itself is the major reward for stronger players, and that the major tournaments do a good job of recognizing the strongest teams.!
