K-12 Scholastic Chess in Houston, TX
Keeping FUN the main idea...

To be a successful operation, we need help from the member schools.  Some of the areas where you might help out are listed here. If you think of other needs, let me know!

1.. Tournament Officials                       and Directors:

We especially are interested in training many adults to act as tournament staff. We intend to create a training and certification for tournament director assistants and additional computer

operators in particular. We envision a system that would certify all coaches as basic monitors and as they gain experience, place greater responsibility on them for adjudicating disputes and helping resolve simple questions.  This apprenticeship program would ease the burden on the primary organizers who would still be available for appeals and difficult rulings. We envision:

Level 1: Apprentice Tournament official
these have read the rules of chess and understand common situations arising in scholastic chess  and how to resolve them fairly.

Level 2: Tournament Official
Are very familiar with the rules of chess and have gained significant experience with HCA Chess

Level 3: HCA / USCF Referee
Expert in the rules of Chess and their application to scholastic chess, these coaches and sponsors will be section officials and direct the operation of any HCA or USCF sections. They must also be USCF certified.

Level 4: Tournament Directors
The top 5 or so HCA officers, the Director and his immediate staff.

2. Computer Staff:

In addition to tournament directors, we are always seeking to train new assistants in the use of the computer software used in our tournaments. Computer operators are vital to the success of our events.

3..  Skittles area monitors

Other adults are needed to supervise students between games.  Everyone can contribute to a great event!
